Review: Upstairs at the Beresford by Will Carver

I will read everything Will Carver writes.

So it seems (totally confirmed (not)) that Will thought damn(!) Night loved The Beresford, how do we make her fall in love even more with the prequel?

Ding dong.

By giving her Mr Balliol.

Well… Thank you. You were right.

Upstairs at the Beresford introduces us to a bunch of interesting characters, all having their secrets, and we’re keen to find out more about them. They might have all ended up at the Beresford but they’re all distinctive voices.

Most importantly we find out way more about how it all works, how a certain character from The Beresford came to be, and the book makes us think about the society today – and it all reads great because it’s not about being preachy, it just makes you think. And it’s bloody true.

Will Carver doesn’t care about being sensitive, he just says it how it is which is refreshing. His characters do so as well. I think this is why it reads easily even if technically the subjects aren’t. There isn’t jumping around the subjects or being overwhelming or dragging anything out for the effect – it’s just straight to the point.

I love that the author follows the formula of quick short chapters because it always worked for me better, too.

Anyway – here is the most important thing, Mr Carver – I need a book about Ballion and Jonessy now! I need more! That last chapter was such a tease!

Thank you to the lovely Karen @ Orenda for remembering I’m such a fan ❤️
